The look of Qi Lin is said to be a combination of different auspicious animals in Chinese culture. The new design of Qi Lin gives a new look from the traditional ones, yet keeping all the significant elements: 

 

Deer Horn: Deer in Chinese culture is an auspicious animal related to longevity and wealth.

 

Lion Head: In ancient China, the lion was more of a mythical beast. Fierce-looking and often used to ward off evil spirits and protect houses. 

 

Cow Tail: Cow in Chinese culture represents the modesty, diligent and kindness morality. 

 

Fish Scale: The pronunciation of Fish ( 鱼: yu) and Surplus (余: yu) is the same. Thus, the Chinese often used Fish to symbolized having wealth and prosperity.

 

Horse Hoof: Horse often represents a bold and sturdy spirit, associated with success in Chinese culture.

Qi Lin in Chinese culture is a representation of auspicious and blessing of happiness, carries many good wishes. In Feng Shui practise, Qi Lin used to enhance good fortune in many aspects.

Origin

There are many traditions and ancient records of Qi Lin. Some say it is a mythical creature made-up by ancient Chinese, it is sustenance to yearning for a better life, while some say it indeed exits.

 

One of the famous Chinese legends about Qi Lin is related to the great Chinese philosopher, Confucius. It says that a Qi-Lin appeared before the day that Confucius was born and spat a jade book in his yard. Thus, the appearance of Qi-Lin also symbolized the birth of sage. Qi Lin also used to describe a rare and precious person or thing.
