Three legs: In Chinese culture, the toad with only three legs is a symbol of wealth.

 

Toad skin: The bumps at the back only has indicated it is a toad but not too much to bring visual discomfort. 

 

Mouth: The wide-open mouth allow the user to intuitively want to put in the coins or to pour it out, which translate the symbol of sucking and spitting of the wealth into physical interaction.

Origin 

The literary allusion of three-legged toad comes from “the legend of the god of wealth Liu Hai and golden toad”. 

 

A Taoist immortal Liu Hai travels around to subjugation demons and alms the world. One day, he defeated a golden toad demon that harms people. The golden toad injured and broke a leg, so only three-legged later. The golden toad bit in treasures and followed Liu Hai to spread money to seek atonement. The toad goes from door to door to spit out money from its tummy to help the poor. Since then, people believed that when three-legged golden toad comes means it brings wealth to the family.
